Appropriations Vote First Step in Accessing Abundant Supplies of U.S. Natural Gas

WASHINGTON, DC – The Consumer Alliance for Energy Security (CAES) today issued this statement following the vote in the House Appropriations Committee on Congressman John Peterson’s (R-PA-5) amendment to the Interior and Environment Appropriations bill that would lift the federal moratoria on natural gas exploration on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS):

"The House Appropriations Committee should be commended for their leadership in helping address the natural gas crisis gripping our country. It’s hurting consumers, weakening our manufacturing base and costing millions of jobs. Moreover, we are delighted that those who voted in favor of Congressman Peterson’s amendment understand these precious energy resources can be safely accessed with the latest, state-of-the-art technology. Today’s vote was a thoughtful and patriotic action.

"Today’s vote is a step in the right direction toward expanding access to the abundant supplies of domestic natural gas and provides much needed relief to consumers who are paying prices that are at historic levels. Hospitals, schools, local governments and consumers have all seen remarkable increases in their natural gas bills – far more dramatic than even those at the gas pump. With today’s vote, that changed and we applaud their willingness to stand up and be counted as they help all consumers and energy users deal with high U.S. energy prices."
