CAES PRAISES SENATE VOTE, LOOKS FORWARD TO DEBATE ON CRITICAL ISSUE
Consumers Need Relief from High U.S. Energy Prices,
S. 3711 Is Critical Step
WASHINGTON, DC – The Consumer Alliance for Energy Security today issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted to move forward with consideration of S. 3711, The Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act of 2006:
“Today, the U.S. Senate took a positive step toward lowering energy costs for U.S. consumers, small businesses, families and manufacturers. Those who voted to begin the important debate on S. 3711 are to be applauded for recognizing what more than 60 percent of America recognizes – now is the time to safely access American supplies of energy on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).
“Passage of S. 3711 will help lower energy prices for every American and will give guaranteed access to 8.3 million acres of the OCS, enough energy to heat and cool 6 million homes for 15 years.
“As S. 3711 moves to a final vote, we encourage Senators to show their commitment to addressing the severe energy crisis slowing our economy, damaging our competitiveness, and hurting consumers and workers alike.
“Unlocking our domestic energy potential will help lower energy prices for every American and strengthen our nation’s energy security. Now is the time to safely access America’s energy supplies on the OCS. Every American is counting on it.”
