CAES: SENATE AGREEMENT ON OCS ENERGY EXPLORATION ‘ENCOURAGING’
Concern Legislation Continues to Leave Significant U.S. Energy Supplies Off-Limits
WASHINGTON, DC – The Consumer Alliance for Energy Security today released the following statement after U.S. Senate leaders an announced agreement on consideration of legislation to expand access to U.S. energy resources in the Gulf of Mexico:
“We are encouraged by the news this afternoon that U.S. Senate leaders have reached an accord on consideration of legislation that would safely access America’s energy supply in the area known as Lease Sale 181 in the Gulf of Mexico. It opens additional energy supplies and enables the states and the U.S. Treasury to benefit from revenues derived from deep sea exploration. The agreement is as it should be: bipartisan. This is critical because the current energy crisis is negatively impacting every American."
“While this agreement is a positive development, the legislation still leaves significant amounts of America’s abundant energy supplies off limits to exploration. Providing greater access to additional energy supplies will help alleviate the negative impact the energy crisis is having on U.S. consumers, small business and manufacturers, seniors on fixed incomes, local governments and hospitals who struggle on a monthly basis with energy costs that are simply higher than they should be."
“We understand that there is still much work to be done and we will work to urge Senators to support this legislation. We hope along the way, the leaders in the Senate will understand that American consumers and the American economy are paying a too high a price and need greater relief from high U.S. energy prices.”
