CAES To Congressional GOP Leadership: Include Natural Gas In Energy Proposal
Any Legislation Moving Through Congress Must Include Solution To Near-Record High Natural Gas Prices
April 27, 2006 - WASHINGTON, DC – The Consumer Alliance for Energy Security (CAES), in reaction to the House and Senate Republican leaderships’ initial energy proposals, today issued the following statement:
“We are encouraged that members of the Republican leadership in the House and Senate intend to urgently move legislation to address high U.S. energy prices. The current proposals do not include a solution to reduce near record high natural gas prices. Since 2000, high energy prices, including natural gas, have contributed to a loss of more than 3.1 million high-paying U.S. manufacturing jobs.
“In October 2005, natural gas prices sky-rocketed to $15.00 per million Btu, equivalent to $7.50 a gallon for gasoline. For all of 2005, natural gas averaged nearly $9.00/MMBtu, that’s equivalent to $4.62 a gallon for gasoline. Conflicting energy policies have caused this significant imbalance between supply and demand. Only Congress can fix this problem that’s gripping our nation. We strongly encourage GOP leaders in the House and Senate to include provisions in their energy proposals that will address the near-record high natural gas prices.”
