CONGRESS MUST ADDRESS OCS LEGISLATION AFTER NOVEMBER ELECTION

U.S. Consumers Need Relief from Record High Energy Prices

September 29, 2006

Washington, DC -- The Consumer Alliance for Energy Security (CAES) today issued the following statement in response to Congress’ inability to reach an agreement on legislation that would safely access abundant supplies of American energy on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS):

“The impasse on such an important issue is disheartening to U.S. consumers.  We strongly urge House and Senate leaders to put OCS legislation at the top of their priority list when they return in November. Congress holds the key to unlocking the abundant supplies of American energy on the OCS and they must complete their job.  American consumers are counting on them.

“Until this year, we’ve had a ‘Just Say No’ energy policy in the U.S.  That changed with H.R. 4761 and S. 3711 – both bills would provide relief from record-high energy prices for U.S. consumers, businesses, manufacturers, schools, hospitals and other energy users.

“Congress has a historic opportunity to strengthen America’s national security by safely accessing American energy supplies.  U.S. consumers are demanding action because they recognize the risk we take every day when we rely on unstable, hostile foreign nations for our energy.  We intend to send a strong message to Congress in the coming weeks and will continue to do everything possible to mobilize our constituents to make this a top priority when Congress reconvenes.”
