MOMENTUM CONTINUES TO SHIFT IN U.S. HOUSE IN FAVOR OF ACCESSING DOMESTIC ENERGY SUPPLIES

29-9 House Resources Vote Latest Example of Shift

WASHINGTON, DC – The Consumer Alliance for Energy Security today issued the following statement after the 29-9 vote in favor of H.R. 4761, The Deep Ocean Energy Resources Act, in the House Resources Committee:

"Today’s overwhelming, bipartisan 29-9 vote to send H.R. 4761 to the full House for consideration is a giant step in the right direction to lower energy costs for America’s consumers, farmers, small businesses and manufacturers who have borne the brunt of record high prices over the last six years.  This bill can provide affordable and reliable energy produced right here at home, help stem the tide of millions of American jobs being sent overseas and enhance our nation’s energy security.   We commend those Committee Members who supported H.R. 4761 for their leadership in helping to end the cycle of “Just Say No” energy policy that has plagued our nation for more than two decades."

"What the members of the House Resources Committee have done is acknowledge what the overwhelming majority of Americans recognize:  we have a real and significant energy crisis in this country and the solution is to safely access America’s vast and abundant energy resources on the Outer Continental Shelf.  Using the latest technology, energy exploration can be done – is being done – safely around the globe by every other industrialized nation.  It’s high time the U.S. follows suit."

“Energy policy has always been a much debated subject in Congress.  The legislation that emerged today from the House Resources Committee is significant, not just because it will reverse the supply-demand imbalance and lower energy prices for U.S. consumers, but also because it has broad, bipartisan support as it moves to the House Floor.  We strongly urge both House and Senate leaders to continue in this spirit of bipartisanship as they consider this legislation that is so critical for America’s future.”
