OCS is Vital to America's Economic Health

Support HR 4761, the Deep Ocean Energy Resources (DOER) Act

Dear Colleague:

Energy costs are killing jobs in America.  Companies from the fertilizer industry to the manufacturing sector are being crippled by high energy costs and forced to close production or even look oversees for opportunities.  Very simply, we are losing jobs in America due to our lack of energy self-sufficiency.

Unfortunately, government barriers prevent us from safely exploring domestic energy resources, such as those in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).  Instead, the U.S. currently sends over $300 billion overseas every year to import energy we can produce here at home.  This is why energy imports account for one-third of our annual trade deficit.

The United States is still the world's number one economy, but for our economy to be able to compete in the future we need a reliable and stable source of domestic energy. Current energy prices are hurting our economy, and if we can not find a way to stabilize our energy costs, we will force businesses to go elsewhere.  Congress needs to encourage opening more domestic sources of clean, reliable energy -- not restricting those sources.  Expanding our offshore drilling will help relieve our dependency on foreign sources of energy.

I urge you to vote for this measure towards energy self-sufficiency and ensure the future health of the American economy.

Sincerely,
Todd Tiahrt
Member of Congress
